7 Key Principles of Influence and using them on LinkedIn. A lot is spoken about the key principles of Influence that Dr Cialdini authored over 2 decades ago. But how do you apply them to LinkedIn. Let me give you a quick run down. First, avoid forced reciprocity. Don’t value vomit on people. Don’t ask complex questions. Don’t give people a free video in your first message hoping they’ll do something for you. Instead, build rapport and reciprocity naturally. Ask a simple question or make a simple comment about their profile. Find out what THEIR problems are before you offer to help them. Second, pack your profile with REAL social proof. Stories, testimonials and case studies from REAL clients... ...NOT fake social proof. I know you can pay $1500 or whatever to get a few press releases on big name media websites, but that stuff doesn’t work... because it’s not real and everyone knows it. Third, demonstrate that you actually like the people you work with. Talk about THEM and THEIR problems, not just your achievements. Fourth, demonstrate your authority without being spammy or salesy. Remember, if you describe THEIR problem better than they can, they’ll naturally assume you have the authority and ability to solve their problem. Fifth, use scarcity to ramp up the pressure... but please, make sure it’s real. It’s fine to give people a fast-action offer on the phone, but if so, you have to stick with it... even if they come back later and want the phone price. Stick to your guns, otherwise it’ll come back to bite you in the butt (it’s happened to me). Sixth, if you want to attract serious, committed people, you have to be committed to the platform too. That means, complete your profile already! Make sure all the various components are there... picture, bio, recommendations, and so on. Don’t worry too much about your CV though. It’s mostly irrelevant. Seventh, find ways to UNITE with people... by activating the “us vs them” frame. This is extremely powerful, because it taps into one of our most primal desires to fit into the tribe. It’s also relatively easy, especially in the rapport building phase, because all you need to do is actually read their profile and find something you have in common... some tribe that you’re both a part of. I really love getting emails from Chris Voss. There is always a reminder or something brand new to try in my negotiations. Today's one that I forgot about, is so good, I had used this before knowing Voss is the master of it. It's in chapter 3 of his awesome book, Never Split the Difference. When you probably know you are going to be in "trouble" with the person you have to negotiate with, and in this case Voss talks about trying to get his suitcases at Sydney airport from a secure area to enable a transfer and having to deal with an obviously not so cheerful customs inspector, he walked up and tried an "accusation audit". He suggested one of these two lines as example: “I’m here to sign-up for the mistake of the day award.” (Effective pause) “I’m about to make your day incredibly difficult.” (Effective pause) How awesome right? Challenge them to prove you wrong. I have done this many times in the past, but it's something I haven't used for a while. Time to bring it back into play. It is such an effective way to get people to actually prove you wrong and show they can overcome your accusation.
